Born in 1943, Madrid

Julio Iglesias is one of the most famous singers in Spain and the most commercially successful in the world. I think this will surprise you since he wasn’t only a singer but also a composer, musician, lawyer, businessman, and WAIT, also a former soccer player! Yes, he made his debut as a goalkeeper in the first team of Real Madrid. 

The pop style is the one we can hear the most in his songs and romantic music. 

Did you know that he’s the artist who has sold the most albums in the world in different languages? Yes, more than 100 million, in 14 other languages, which made him win a Guinness Record. But he not only got one, but he also got another Guinness Record for being the second Latin artist with more albums sold worldwide until today. In fact, in 2013, he was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.

During his career, he has won many awards, such as the Grammy, the Latin Grammy, the World Music Award, the Billboard Music Award, and the American Music Award. 

He has also received the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts of Spain, and UNICEF named him Special Ambassador for the Performing Arts in 1989.

2. Plácido Domingo

Born in 1941, Madrid

Placido Domingo stands out as a Spanish opera singer, as well as an orchestra conductor. He sings not only in Spanish but also in Italian, French, German, and English. He has also been very successful in the popular and Latin music genres.

He’s the most relevant tenor of the 20th century and the best Verdian Otello for all he has achieved. He has won 14 Grammy and Latin awards, and many of his albums were silver, gold, platinum, and multi-platinum. In addition, he also received the Prince of Asturias Award. 

He has conducted many operas, becoming the general director of the Los Angeles Opera in California from 2017 to 2019.

In 1990, he sang with two other world references, Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras, and they became “The Three Tenors.” The three made an album, and it was the best-selling classical album!

Did you know that Placido Domingo managed to gather more than 400.000 people in a concert in Central Park in NY? A real madness!

3. Montserrat Caballé

Born in 1933, Barcelona

Died in 2018, Barcelona

She was a very successful opera soprano singer in Spain and internationally. She became well known for her roles in works by Verdi, Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. 

But her big international breakthrough came with her performance in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, which made her very famous, and people from all over the world went to see her perform in the leading opera houses. 

She had a spectacular voice, which left everyone with goosebumps. She received several international awards, including Grammy Awards. 

Caballé recorded a duet with Freddie Mercury that became the official song of the 1992 Olympic Games.

4. Lola Flores

Born in 1923, Cádiz

Died in 1995, Madrid

Lola Flores was also a singer, dancer, and actress. 

Her beginnings in the world of music were in the genre of “copla”, combining it also with “rumbas” and “rancheras.” 

As for her career as an actress, you can see her in films such as Reportaje (1953), "¡Ay, pena, penita, pena!" (1953), “La Faraona” (1956), and “Los Tres Amores de Lola” (1956).

Lola Flores was one of the most admired women in Spain and one of the first to speak freely about violence against women and other topics that women never dared to mention.

5. Joan Manuel Serrat

Born in 1943, Barcelona

Serrat is a well-known singer-songwriter who stands out as a composer and actor. Like many other singers, he was unsatisfied with that and dedicated time to writing and poetry.

His great sources of inspiration are poets like Mario Benedetti, Antonio Machado, Miguel Hernandez, Rafael Alberti, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Pablo Neruda.

In his music, you can find different styles such as Catalan folklore, tango, bolero, Spanish “copla,” and the popular songbook of Latin America.

His spectacular and incredible career, as well as his participation in culture, literature, and art in Spain, led him to receive the Grand Cross of the Civil Order by Alfonso X “El Sabio.” And, of course, he wouldn’t deserve less, and he also won the Latin Grammy “Person of the Year” award in 2014.

6. Raphael

Born in 1943, Jaén

Raphael is one of the most famous singers in history, with almost sixty years of artistic career. His light baritone tone and romantic ballads with touches of Latin pop made him unique and very well known worldwide. 

Raphael has a peculiar singing style, making him stand out for his easily recognizable voice and his particular way of interpreting the songs.

When he goes on stage to sing, he gets so into the role that he also does a kind of performance. He’s worth seeing because of the gestures he has and the movements he makes while singing. Depending on his mood, he’ll give you a different performance, from flamenco movements and folkloric dances to a touch of drama. Oh, and don’t be surprised to see him improvise the lyrics of a song! 7. Rocío Jurado

Born in 1943, Cádiz

Died in 2006, Madrid

Rocio Jurado was a Spanish singer who revolutionized the “copla” genre. Not only did she have great fame as a singer in Spain, but her voice was heard worldwide and was one of the most powerful in our history. 

Her acting wardrobe was much commented on as it always turned out to be somewhat provocative. 

She didn’t only focus on one type of music but moved between flamenco, Spanish pop, Andalusian “copla,” bolero, and romantic ballad. 

The romantic ballads with orchestral instrumentation led her to become an international star. 

A fact to remember in her incredible musical career were her 80 platinum and 150 gold records, for all her effort and perseverance. 

She also received the America’s Best Latin Voice award in 1988 and the Voice of the Millennium award in 2000.

Between the 70s and 80s, her greatest hits were: “Si amanece,” “Como una ola,” “Lo siento mi amor,” “Señora,” “Se nos rompió el amor” and “Muera el amor,” among many others.

8. Enrique Iglesias

Born in 1975, Madrid

Without a doubt one of the favorites and the ones you’ll never get tired of listening to on Spotify.

Enrique is the son of the famous singer Julio Iglesias I mentioned earlier in this post and the well-known Isabel Preysler. 

His musical career began in 1995 when he signed a contract with Fonovisa Records. Fonovisa Records was the record label that launched him, but later, he worked with others such as Interscope, Universal Music, Universal Republic, and Sony Music. 

This excellent star has sold more than 19 million albums in the US, ranking as one of the best-selling Latin artists. 

Enrique Iglesias has won the most important and prestigious awards in the recording industry. Among them, a Grammy for Best Latin Artist, 5 Latin Grammys, 5 Billboard Awards, 45 Latin Billboard Awards, 10 World Music Awards, 8 American Music Awards, 10 Latin American Music Awards, and 3 MTV Europe Music Awards, among many others.

The singer holds the record of placing 27 songs at the top of the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks.

9. Alejandro Sanz

Born in 1968, Madrid

Alejandro Sanz’s music moves between pop rock, flamenco, Spanish rock, ballad, and Latin pop, with a tenor tone.

He has also tried other genres, such as funk and jazz. 

His musical career began in 1988, and he’s still one of the most listened-to Spanish singers. He has become an excellent reference for many and one of history’s most influential Spanish singers. 

The album “Más” was the one that brought him international success in 1997. In 2000 with his other album, “El Alma al Aire,” he sold more than a million copies in the first week. And in 2002, he was the first Spanish artist to record an MTV Unplugged album.

In 2005, he recorded with Shakira the famous song “La Tortura,” becoming number 1 on many charts worldwide. 

Since he started until today, he has sold more than 25 million records, an absolute craziness! Among the awards he has won are 20 Latin Grammys and 4 Grammy Awards. In addition, he has received the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year 3 times.

10. David Bisbal

Born in 1979, Almería

David Bisbal first became known on the Spanish TV show “Operación Triunfo” in 2001. 

Although he was not the program’s winner, he made the Spanish public fall in love with him. He’s the singer who has been the most successful and has gone the furthest of all who participated. 

Since then, the blonder singer has not stopped with his Latin pop songs, touring all over Europe and Latin America. 

All the albums he has composed have reached the top of the charts among other Spanish singers. He’s currently considered an international crossover artist.

Bisbal has sold more than five million albums worldwide. With two of his most famous songs, “Corazón Latino” and “Bulería,” he has received the IFPI Platinum Award for selling more than one million copies in Europe.

11. Dani Martín

Born in 1977, Madrid

This Spanish singer is one of our favorites and was the leader of the pop rock group “El canto del loco,” which started in 1999 and split up in 2009. 

“El Canto del Loco” managed to sell more than a million copies of their albums and became one of Spain’s most essential and recognized music groups.

Dani Martín decided to pursue his musical career as a soloist, and besides being a singer, he’s also an actor. He has appeared in some Spanish TV series like “Al salir de clase” and “Los hombres de Paco." 

If you have the opportunity, go to one of his concerts. They are a real show, the energy he transmits is unique, and everybody knows the songs by heart. Trust me; it will be worth it!

12. Pablo Alborán

Born in 1989, Málaga

Pablo Alboran is another Spanish musician and singer-songwriter well known and loved in Spain. 

In 2013 he released his single “Solamente Tú,” which became number 1 on the Spanish charts for weeks. This album made him the first solo artist to sign a full-length debut album and reach the top of the charts since 1998. 

Alboran’s second album, “Tanto” (2012), spawned the number one singles “Quién” and “El Beso” and received the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He has also won one Goya Award for Best Original Song.

13. Rosalía

Born in 1992, Cataluña

Who doesn’t know Rosalia? Something is wrong if you don’t know her because she’s one of our stars recognized worldwide. 

Her album “El Mal Querer” (2018), was the one that made her famous, where she mixed the typical flamenco of the Spanish culture with a modern touch. She won the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year with her album. 

Her first international success was with her song “Con Altura” with J Balvin in 2019, where she left flamenco aside and went all in with “reggaetón.” She won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Song. In addition, Rosalia has achieved ten number 1 in Spain!

But without a doubt, the tremendous musical revolution has come with her album “Motomami,” where she has created her characteristic sound, which has become an absolute bomb!

Rosalia has collaborated with other great music stars such as Bad Bunny, Ozuna, and Travis Scott. 

She’s one of the greats of our country and has managed to give a twist to the music by doing something different and adding a personal and original touch!

14. C. Tangana

Born in 1990, Madrid

His real name is Antón Alvarez Alfaro, but his artistic name and the one everyone knows him by is C. Tangana. Unlike the other musical artists mentioned above, C. Tangana is known for being one of the most successful Spanish rappers.

The rapper is inspired by the musical trends of the moment and by other artists he admires, with which he then manages to come up with lyrics that become super popular and drive everyone crazy. 

In 2020, Forbes named him as one of the most influential people and one of the most creative Spanish artists.

15. Aitana

Born in 1999, Barcelona

She’s one of the youngest Spanish singers and will undoubtedly go far.

Like Bisbal, Aitana participated in 2017 in the Spanish reality TV show “Operación Triunfo” and also failed to be the winner.  

Her style, with which she has had incredible success, is the pop of the XXI century. 

Being so young, simple, and active in social media is helping her to connect with many teenagers of her age and go further as an artist.

This young promise recorded a song with Ana Guerra that was a hit in Spain and became the number 1 of the most listened to for weeks. 

Aitana is also known worldwide; she has collaborated with other international artists such as Bisbal, Cali y El Dandee, Sebastian Yatra, and even Katy Perry!

She’s currently known as the Pop Spanish Princess, “Princesa española del pop,” as she has achieved four number 1 hits with “Lo Malo,” “Teléfono,” “Vas a quedarte,” and “Mon Amour.” All this since she started her musical career and she’s only 23 years old!

16. Alvaro Soler

Born in 1991, Barcelona

Alvaro Soler is having a lot of success in Spain and internationally. This Spanish singer and songwriter has a German background and speaks perfect English, which also helps him to reach a wider audience.

His song “El mismo sol” in 2015 made him famous, and later, he covered it with Jennifer Lopez. This song reached the top positions in more than 25 countries!

And later, his song “Sofia” reached more than 600 million plays on Youtube. Something incredible!

17. Quevedo

Born in 2001, Madrid

Pedro Luis Domínguez Quevedo, like C. Tangana, is an artist who stands out as a Spanish rapper. In 2021 with his single “Ahora y Siempre,” he reached second in Spotify’s Global Viral 50 list and the Spain Viral 50 list. 

But this year, in 2022, he released his most successful single, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 52,” along with the Argentine producer Bizarrap, becoming one of the most popular of the moment. The song had more than 10 million views in the first 24 hours since it was released!! A real madness!
